Raising Garlic
We are Vermont Roots Farm, located in the Northeast Kingdom at the top-right corner of the state. We focus on growing hardneck garlic utilizing organically prescribed farming methods. We feel this provides a superior product to that found in the supermarket.

Brix score
Refractormeter A recent purchase is the refractometer shown here. This measures the soluble solids content of a liquid, and approximates the sugar content and general health of a sample. The "Brix score" of garlic is generally between 12 and 18. The higher the score the sweeter the garlic and the more intense the flavor. We are pleased to report our readings have been between 40 and 43. We attribute this to our nutrient rich soils and proper pH conditions.

Green Manure
Buckwheat growing in the garlic field We are starting to think about the fall planting. Our "green manure" this year is buckwheat. It's long tap root will help to break up our clay soil more and help to move more nutrients to the top of the soil. It will also work to insert a lot of nitrogen into the ground when we turn it in.

Raising Garlic plants
Garlic in the field reaching for the sun We are about two weeks away from scape season now and the Garlic plants are growing rapidly from the ground. We side dressed more heavily this year with natural nitrogen supplements (blood meal, kelp foiage spray) and are pleased with the results.
